People Magazine Covers Space Camp

People Magazine - Cover - ThumbnailWhen Space Camp was just a little over one year old, People Magazine ran, in their August 8, 1983 edition, a small article on Space Camp!

I’ve posted it here for all to enjoy! Pictures of rocket launch and the 5DF chair, as well as the old “Zero ‘G’ Machine” are in the article as is a description of Space Camp from a camper’s perspective.

I do hope you enjoy it!

Endeavour is Dead. Long Live Endeavour

The Endeavor shuttle simulator Academy kids have come to know and love is leaving the TCF. But the TCF will not be devoid of an Endeavor orbiter as the current Intrepid simulator will be renamed.

Still, it’s a shame. I spent more time than anyone else there this past summer. It’s a shame to see the old gal go!

You can see the flyer here, which includes info regarding how/where to purchase tickets, as well as other additional information.

Also, to see what an effort it takes to restore one of these mighty vehicles, you really should read the posted article from an issue of Air & Space about what it took to restore KSC’s Saturn V.

Hope to see you there!

We Have Our Astronaut!

In what has surely been a long time coming, Space Camp now has an astronaut to truly call its own!

Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger who is one of the new batch of astronauts also attended Space Camp!

To be more specific, I believe she attended Space Academy for Educators in 1990…the details have been a little unclear.

Regardless, it’s nice to finally have one! While it may have taken twenty-two years for it to happen, such a thing certainly was inevitable!

HabFiles Update — The Oldest Thing Yet

Space Camp News - Winter 1985 - ThumbnailI’ve made an update to the HabFiles section.

I do believe it’s the oldest thing I’ve ever seen from Space Camp! Be sure to savor every page!

And this one is a special one.

It has Christa McAuliffe at Space Camp as well as an article announcing the Space Camp movie. Those were surely much more innocent times.

ASA Alumnus in Miss USA Pageant

Miss New Mexico, Jenna HardinRecently crowned Miss New Mexico and two time Advanced Space Academy alumnus Jenna Hardin will be competing on Monday in the Miss USA Pageant!

The pageant will air on NBC Monday night starting at 9:00PM Eastern Daylight Time. A special Miss USA FearFactor will be on right before that, but I don’t believe they’ve announced which women have been chosen to participate.

Watch and support your fellow Space Camper! Also, during the pageant, make sure you visit the Miss USA website and vote for Miss New Mexico for the “Miss Photogenic Award!” The online votes will be tallied and announced at the end of the competition. So be sure to go vote!

And to find out just how she got involved in such a crazy event, see here.

Update: Jenna’s made it into the top 15!

Update: And she was just robbed, not making it into the top 10. Tough break indeed!

We Have a New Board

Well, the wait is finally over. The Alabama Space Science Exhibit Commission has new members.

The article, including the list of the Board members, can be found here .

Personally, I’m disappointed that at least one of a couple of individuals I had in mind weren’t appointed.

It really just looks like an uninspired list of bureaucrats and businessmen. Essential, to be sure, but the Alabama Space Science Exhibit Commission surely shouldn’t be composed only of members such as these.

Hopefully, in time, they will prove me wrong. And if not, nine members’ terms will expire next year, and a second chance will be granted.
