Always a Good Time

The Shuttle “Rocketed” Our World event was held this evening at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center to commemorate those who worked on the program and celebrate the legacy left by the worlds first reusable spacecraft.

The turnout for the event was the best I have seen in some time.  An early estimation put the total number of attendees expected at 5,000, though that number has not yet been verified.

The event was spread throughout the Space & Rocket Center.  Multiple locations had live music, astronaut autograph sessions, and food aplenty!

The event was great and hopefully will give the Space & Rocket Center some great ideas for how best to commemorate thirty years of Space Camp next year!

Shuttle Celebration Saturday

In conjunction with the Marshall Space Flight Center, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center will host the “Space Shuttle ‘Rocketed’ our World” event this Saturday, August 20, 2011.

The event will run from 6pm to 10pm and a mere five bucks will buy you a drink, chips, and a hot dog, as well as provide access to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center for the evening.  In addition to the Center’s normal offerings, live music and other entertainment will be available.

More information is available on the Marshall Facebook page for the event, and tickets can be purchased at the Space Camp Store.

Also don’t forget the Salute to the Shuttle Program will be held the following Friday.  NASA Administrator and former astronaut Charles Bolden will be in attendance!

2011 Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

Results are in for the 2011 Space Camp Hall of Fame inductees.

Though there weren’t enough votes for any one person in the “Friend” category, two alumni and one former staff member have made the cut.

Nevertheless, congratulations are in order to Dr. Valerie Meyers, Lt. Col. Burke Hare III, and Dr. Michelle Thaller.

Be sure to come see their induction into the Space Camp Hall of Fame at the Salute to the Space Shuttle Program on August 26, 2011.

Tickets for the event are a very reasonable $20 and can be purchased here.

And That’s the Way it Was – ISC 2011 Opening Ceremony

ISC 2011, the twentieth International Space Camp, comes to a close today.  But the opening ceremony was the best in recent memory.  And I have it pretty much in its entirety for your enjoyment!

The Parade of Nations into the Davidson Center 3D Theatre officially marked the beginning of the ceremony.  Dr. Deborah Barnhart made her first ISC Opening Ceremony remarks as CEO of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.

Astronaut Robert “Hoot” Gibson, friend of Space Camp and all around magnanimous man, again had some wonderful remarks for the newly arrived visitors to our foreign lands.

The National Teachers of the Year began the introductions.  As usual, an eclectic array of costumes were on display to help each teacher show off some feature of his or her state or territory.

The Austria contingent began the international leg of the ceremony.

After Austria, the groups went as follows:

Unfortunately, it seems flight troubles kept Greece and The Netherlands from arriving in time to give their presentations.

Mike Flachbart, Vice President of Operations, gave a reading of the proclamation from the Governor of the State of Alabama to officially open International Space Camp 2011.  This ended the ceremony and gave the teachers and students a chance to try some good ol’ Southern barbecue!

After dinner, Teacher of the Year Michelle Shearer provided some nice after dinner remarks to all of the students and teachers in the room.

And that’s the way it was at the 2011 International Space Camp Opening Ceremony, held on July 23, 2011.

Fall to Earth Today

Falling to Earth Book CoverDon’t forget about the Falling to Earth book launch event being held today at the Air & Space Museum!
